Welcome

Hello examiner, this project has certainly put our skills as director, editor, camera operator and set designer as we all had to take these roles at certain points throughout this journey. With the limited time we had to carry out this task I will always look back at our final product and see imperfection because no matter how much time you dedicate to a piece of work, there is always something that could have been changed for the better. I hope you see our dedication to this project through our blogs and I wish you the best of luck.

Final Production

This is the final version of our Film opening, since the draft version we have made a number of small tweaks following advice from different audiences.

Form Research: Moving Image

Influencial Films

I have linked The Hunger's Games official trailer because it is a successful Dystopian film and the concept behind it will be useful towards our moving image. In my opinion i love the idea of hunger and the fact that the plot goes against innocent children. Also, i like the way they have introduced the concept behind what has happened through the use of simple sentences on a black screen, so i think that we will do something like this in order to educate the audience, but it will be more entertaining instead of simple description on a screen for the audience to read. So as an example, we will either do a monologue or record radio takings to retrieve all of the information related to the context of our production ideas.

In response to our final production, we used a radio announcement which allowed the character as well as the audience to be aware of the latest news and threats that are taking place presently in our film.

Top grossing movies 1995-2016

Even though Action is the genre with the highest inflation adjusted gross, we are keen on creating a Dystopian Thriller. Within professional media it can be distributed into Cinemas with a low budget, compared to Actions and Science-Fictions that require a larger budget for special effects and other technologies like CGI. For example, Avatar.

The establishing shot.

In this establishing shot you can see: a rucksack, tin cans, newspapers and typical toilet facilities. The use of the rucksack connotes that he moves from location to location, representing the lawless society and the binary opposite of good vs evil. Secondly, the use of the tin cans connotes a food source but the fact that they are empty represents the lack of nutrients and the characters struggle to not face hunger (which follows a conventional theme within a Dystopia.) Thirdly, the newspapers connote an abandoned toilet because this subverts against a typical modern day toilet as you would expect to see most of the mirror. We were initially going to use blood but we did not have any in time. This would have been more effective in creating suspense and making the opening more gruesome.

This setting is connoted as grimy, which is positive because we want to connote a negative future. Also, it emphasises the lack of buildings because he wouldn't be sleeping in this location if there were better options. Furthermore, the colour of brown, white and green also helps to exaggerate the connotations of a disgusting location and I think they work well in producing a darker overall result, possibly resembling the Thriller genre more.

I think that this shot was successful because it clearly established the setting, as the audience could get a real sense for the sub-genre. Additionally, we chose this high angle to create a sense that this was significant because it connoted that the setting was being watched. Also this angle was practically positive since it enabled more of the performance space to be seen by the audience, hopefully increasing their understanding.
